On Wednesday 25th August, 2004 Professor Marie Bashir AC, Governor of the State of NSW declared the Areas of Coolah and Coonabarabran to be amalgamated so as to constitute the new Warrumbungle Shire. Elections were held on Saturday 5th March, 2005 to elect the first Council for the new Shire, consisting of 9 Councillors. Council looks forward to the challenges of this new Shire and encourages residents to contact Council with their concerns, thoughts and ideas. The Warrumbungle Shire Council is located within the foothills of the Warrumbungle and Coolah Tops mountain ranges, halfway between the regional cities of Dubbo and Tamworth. The Shire has a population of 11,000 and provides schooling to Year 12, excellent medical and sporting facilities and many community organisations. With a focus on tourism, the area boasts a wide range of attractions including the internationally acclaimed Siding Spring Observatory, Coolah Tops National Park, State Forests and great accommodation and lifestyle. The area incorporates the towns and villages of Coonabarabran, Coolah, Binnaway, Baradine, Mendooran and Dunedoo.
